For the last 1500 years, as the dark days of winter set in, the church has celebrated Advent. A time of waiting for Christ, the light of the world, to be born. John 1:5 says: “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness doesn’t extinguish the light.” This is the gospel of Christ in one sentence. The darkness of sin, shame, and death cannot extinguish His light. But He can and will chase away the darkness in us.

“The Word became flesh and dwelled among us” means that God has skin in the game. Always has, always will.

The church’s job is to be–like Jesus–God’s skin in the game. In the life of the church–the body of Christ–the Word is to become flesh again and again.
