For the last 1500 years, as the dark days of winter set in, the church has celebrated Advent. A time of waiting for Christ, the light of the world, to be born. John 1:5 says: “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness doesn’t extinguish the light.” This is the gospel of Christ in one sentence. The darkness of sin, shame, and death cannot extinguish His light. But He can and will chase away the darkness in us.

The ancient Apostles’ Creed says, “I believe in the Holy Spirit.” Yet, the Holy Spirit is probably the most misunderstood and neglected Person of the Godhead. Which is incredibly tragic, because the Bible teaches us in many ways that we cannot live without the Spirit.

Gen. 1.1 – 2.4a tells the story of creation in a very particular way. A God who delights in order and peace created our cosmos as a temple to dwell in, and commune with his creation. And he placed humans in the creation to serve as priests in his temple. Human sin disrupted the relationship between heaven and earth, and defiled the temple. The rest of the Bible is a ramshackle story about God working to reunite heaven and earth; restore his temple; and redeem his rogue priests.

Easter means that the Jesus way
    Welcoming the poor and powerless
    Making peace and doing mercy
    Making room at our tables
    Loving our enemies
    Overcoming evil with good
Is the only way to live.
