The Bible has several different names for those who lead the church, like: elders, bishops, overseers. But there’s one description of the leaders of God’s people the Bible returns to again and again: shepherds. In this message, we explore how Jesus is the model and pattern for every shepherd of God’s church, because he is “the good shepherd.”

Have you ever had to do something that seemed impossible? The book of Ruth shows us Naomi, Ruth, and Boaz in impossible situations, having to make choices that seem impossible. Those impossible situations don’t end in the final chapter. But we also see God doing things through them that seem impossible. And God can still do impossible things for, in, with, and through us. “For nothing will be impossible with God.”

The first chapter of Ruth introduces us to two widows–Naomi and Ruth–who have lost everything. As far as Naomi is concerned, she is done, and God is done with her. But there’s still three chapters to go in the story! God is by far not done with Naomi, or Ruth. The book of Ruth is good news for anyone who thinks that God is done with them.

All that is gold does not glitter. God looked past the surface and saw into David’s heart–a heart in tune with God’s own heart. As a creative, a shepherd, and a warrior, David imaged God as a leader of God’s people. What does God see in our hearts?
